Learning Update!

Here is what we are busy learning this week in second grade!
If your child hasn't brought in their owl bag to share, please make sure they bring it to school tomorrow.  We can't wait to learn more about them!

Writing-We are writing small moment stories that explode with feeling.  We are stretching them out with lots of juicy details.  Today, we watched a brainpop that reviewed punctuation at the end of sentences.   Over the summer, many of us have forgotten those important endings to sentences.

Word Study-Next week, we will be starting our first cycle of word study.  This week, we are practicing sorting our words, doing spelling activities and learning about spelling city!

Reading-We are continuing to practice finding "just right" books.  We are also adding reading strategies to our CAFE board.  Ask your child to show you how to Check for Understanding as you read with them at home.  This is a great strategy to make sure we are understanding what we read before continuing to read on.  This week, we are also starting our book log here at school.  We are counting how many books we read during the school day!  Our tally will be added to the other classes to get a grand total.

Math-We are starting the first lessons of the new math curriculum! We will be learning addition properties and counting on to add.

Science-We will be continuing our last lessons of chapter 1 "The Nature of Science". This week, I will be introducing the students to our science notebooks. There we will be collecting data, asking reflective questions and much more!
