Halloween party fun! Parents, Thanks for all you did to help us have an amazing party!

Pumpkin math!

First, we each cut string to see who could find the closest circumference around the pumpkin!  Audri was the closest!
Next we estimated and counted the seeds inside...ask your second grader how many seeds were inside.

Team Learning Update

Here is what we are busy learning this week...

Reading-We are learning how to find the main idea of non-fiction stories.  Students are practicing this skill by using a "good fit" non-fiction book of their choice and finding the main idea and details that they have learned.  Next week, we will be learning how to find text features of fiction stories.  (characters, setting, problem, solution)  On Thursday, we will be sharing some Halloween stories and spooky stories we have written.  If your child would like to bring in a flashlight to use as we read in the dark, they sure can.

Writing-  We are wrapping up our narrative writing unit this week.  Students have worked so hard learning how to write about many small moments in their lives.  I am enjoying sharing what they have been working on with you at conferences!

Math-We are learning more two digit addition with and without regrouping.  Students have been writing word problems for their friends to solve.  Ask your child to describe and share some of the new math games that we are doing in class to help us learn. Tomorrow we will be doing pumpkin math in which we will be measuring, estimating and counting!  It's always fun to carve a pumpkin with 19 kids!  :)

Science-We are learning about animals with backbones (vertebrates) and without backbones (invertebrates).  We are writing insect comic strips that are turning out to be very funny!  Tomorrow we will be going on a mammal scavenger hunt around our room to help us learn more facts about these furry creatures.

~Please make sure to return your zoo permission form along with $5.25 for our buddy field trip next Friday.
~I've enjoyed meeting with half of you last night and look forward to meeting with the rest of you tomorrow.  It's always fun to share all the wonderful things your child is doing in second grade!

Team Learning Update

Hello!  Here is what we are busy learning this week!

Reading-We are learning about main idea and details of both fiction and non-fiction books.  Today, we watched a brainpop video and discussed how the main idea is simply what the story is MOSTLY about.  Then, we found details to support the main idea of a great book we are reading called Owl Moon.  See if your student can find the main idea of the story they read tonight at home.

Writing- We are learning how writers make their writing more powerful.  By including what we see, hear and feel along with stretching out our stories, our writing shines!  We are still working on our small moment (personal narrative) stories but are spending a great deal of time revising because that is what good writers do.   We will also be writing friendly letters to our pen pals at Concord Elementary!

Math- We are wrapping up our chapter on addition strategies.  We have also learned about how to solve addition word problems.  This class is doing a great job on number of the day.  Did you know we are already on day 41 of second grade?  We will be moving on to two digit addition at the end of the week!

Word Study- Students are definitely into the routine of word study.  They are enjoying working with their groups to sort and practice spelling their words.  Your child writes a spelling test reminder in their binder on the night before their test.  Please review the sort with your child and have them show you their word sort and complete sentences using their words.  These activities are due the day they take their test.  The kids are sharing some great ways they are studying their sorts nightly from the list in their binder.  Writing the words on a parent's back seems to be a favorite!

Social Studies/Science- Today, we are learning about Columbus Day!  Tomorrow we will be starting our Science unit on animals.  This will help us to be able to apply what we learn on our fifth grade buddy field trip to the Zoo on Friday, November 8.  The Permission Slip will be coming home soon.

~Thanks for all the time capsule pringles cans.  We still need 5 more!
