Team Learning Update

HI hope you enjoyed this beautiful weekend with your child!  I am looking forward to a great week.
Here is what we are busy learning...

Reading- We will continue to practice making good connections as we read.  This week, we will be learning how to use text features to help us comprehend non-fiction books better.  By taking the time to read headings. titles, captions and table of contents, we can understand more about what we are reading.  Thank you for helping your second grader remember to read for at least 15 minutes each night.  I enjoy having conferences with them and discussing what they are enjoying reading both at school and at home.

Writing-  We are really enjoying becoming writers each day in our classroom.  This week, we will be starting our personal narrative unit.  Students will be writing about "small moments" in their life.  Each student is an expert at this type of writing as it is all about them!  Last week, we wrote about what type of community we would each like to live in and why.  If you are in the hallways at school,, check out our great Social Studies writing displayed!

Word Study- Our first cycle of our word study went well.  It takes a few weeks to get used to and for students to learn the routines.  Here are the test dates of each Team...
Team 1 -  Fridays
Team 2 -  Tuesdays
Team 3 -  Wednesdays
Team 4 -  Thursdays
The best thing you can do to help your student be successful in learning their words is to make sure to do one of the word study activities listed in the binder each night except the night after they take their test.  (They get their new words and do the sort the following day)

Math- We are learning how to compare, order and break apart bigger numbers.  The Chapter 2 math tests were sent home in Friday mail.  We take a pretest and students simply fix their mistakes for the posttest.  Their final score is at the top of the paper in a bright color.  Please encourage your child to study their math facts nightly.  I have included a long list of fun ways to practice their addition and subtraction facts in their binders.  If you have found a great app. or website not on the list, please share with me!

Social Studies-  We are learning about our city, state, country, and continent.  This week, we will be learning about the different landforms that can be found in different areas.

Reminders-
~Grant's Farm night is this Thursday!  5:00-8  Wear blue!
~No School on Friday!  Professional Development for teachers
~Please turn in forms/money for the fundraiser on Tuesday.  If you need more time, we are accepting them all week.
~SCHOOL PICTURES ARE ON WEDNESDAY!  I can't wait to see everyone smile and say cheese!  If you are ordering a package, please send in the money in the envelope on that day.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns about your child, please contact me.
Have a good week!

Team Learning Update

This week, we are staying cool in second grade!  Here is what we are busy learning this week...

Writing-We are wonderful writers!  Each student is working so hard to increase their writing stamina and ideas.  This week, we are writing longer stories in booklets!  We are also writing in different forms including letters and lists.  It's fun to write in different ways!

Reading-We are learning how to be better readers by using our CAFE board.  When you are reading at night with your child, ask them to check for understanding.  When they are not sure if they understand what they just read, they can back up and reread to help them comprehend what they read better.  Our class goal for our reading stamina is 22 minutes!   We are real readers who LOVE to read independently.   Next week, reading groups will begin!

Word Study-  Teams 1 and 2 have started the word study cycle.  Teams 3 and 4 will be starting tomorrow and Friday.  Your child works on sorting words at school and at home.  Your child's spelling words can be found in their yellow word study folder in the binder.  You will find a yellow sheet inside your child's STAR binder full of fun ways to practice spelling words.

Math- We are learning place value to the hundreds place.  Ask your child to share about the fun rap that we watched to help us remember hundreds, tens and ones.  We are also learning about the value of numbers.  For example, 789.  The 7 has a value of 700.  The 8 has a value of 80.  The 9 has a value of 9.   We had our first friend pass addition today on xtra math!  We hope to have many more soon.  There are some great ways to study math facts at home nightly on the blue paper in the STAR binder.

Social Studies-We are wrapping up our chapter on communities this week!  As we learned about rural communities this week, we decided what we would grow and sell at a market and had fun using ipads to learn more about communities.  Our skyscraper creations are so unique too.  Students not only created but also shared and wrote about what was inside their skyscraper-offices,apartments etc.

Reminders
~Thank you for all the Pringles cans donations.  We only need 7 more to finish our time capsule stuffing!
~If you are participating in our MAJOR fundraiser going on now, the first monkey day is Friday. Students only need to sell one item and return the coupon to get a monkey.  Thank you for your support!
~Our first early release is next Wednesday Sept. 18 at 1:40.  Please let me know if your child's dismissal plans have changed from the sheet you filled out at Meet the Teacher Night.
