Team Learning Update

Here is what we are busy learning in second grade....

Writing-  We are learning all about information writing.  We are using mentor texts to help us and conducting experiments.  Then we are writing lab reports to explain what we have done.  We also wrote some great thankful stories last week that I hope you enjoyed sharing with your child.  I have seen a great improvement in spelling sentences this week.  Some students are showing more effort and proofreading before being finished.  Great job!

Reading- We are reviewing and adding some new CAFE strategies to our board.  Your child will be conferencing with me and picking an area to improve in their reading.  When reading with your child at home, you can help them practice the comprehension part by reminding them to back up and reread when they do not understand what they are reading.  Each of you can also ask questions as you read to improve comprehension.  When they are finished reading, have them ask Do I remember what I just read?  Next week, we will be working on sequencing events in stories that we read.

Word Study-  Most students are doing very well in their spelling groups.  I plan to give a mid-year assessment and first week back after break and move students to different levels as needed.  Please ask your child if they are caught up on their word study the night before their test day.  Some students are still working on being responsible and having to complete assignments before taking their test.  Thank you!

Math- We are learning subtraction strategies.  Ask your child how subtraction and addition are related.  They should even be able to show you on paper using three numbers!   We are also working on subtraction word problems and making snowman fact families!  Please continue studying math facts at home on a daily basis.  Just a few minutes can make a BIG difference in memorization.  The math scavenger hunt is coming home today.  It is not due until Dec. 17 (Tuesday)  but I wanted to give the kids enough time to find what they need.  Please feel free to help but let your second grader search/measure/weigh the items.  We will have fun doing learning activities at school with them.  If they get done early, feel free to send the items in a plastic bag with the sheet signed and we can hold it here until needed.  Thanks!

Science- We are wrapping up our chapter on sound, force, and motion this week.  Next week, we will be switching back to Social Studies as we learn about economics.  Junior Achievement is coming in January after the break!
